Clare Burton Memorial Lecture

From 1999 to 2012 ATN WEXDEV combined with the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency and with state women’s advisors to host the Clare Burton Memorial Lectures in each capital city. These lectures commemorated and honoured the significant contribution of leading researcher, bureaucrat and academic Dr Clare Burton who died in 1998.

Past Lectures

The Memorial Lectures honour the significant contribution made by Dr Clare Burton to gender equity and organisational change in higher education and other areas. These lectures have been designed to provide not only an opportunity to remember Clare, but also contribute to wider understandings of and engagement in gender equity..

In 2009 ATN WEXDEV produced a publication which brings together a decade [1999-2008] of the lectures: The Promise and the Price. Ten years of the Clare Burton Memorial Lectures. If you are interested in purchasing a copy of this publication, please visit the national WEXDEV office.

Clare Burton scholarship

The Clare Burton Scholarship was established by the five ATN universities (Curtin, QUT, RMIT, UniSA, UTS) to honour and continue the path-breaking work of Dr. Clare Burton, a leading researcher, public sector administrator, academic, consultant and writer on employment equity, who passed away suddenly in August 1998. It provides funds to support post-graduate research into gender equity. .

A scholarship of $10,000 is available to a student enrolled, or intending to enrol in an ATN university, in either a post-graduate coursework or research degree where the major piece of work focusses on gender equity. The field of gender equity encompasses women and equality in all spheres of endeavour including (but not limited to) the fields of employment, education, health and communication, as well as the particularly gendered professions such as engineering and science.

As well as the funds provided to support their research, the successful scholarship recipient will receive individual support and mentoring related to their current research and future careers from their host institution.

The next Scholarship will be offered for award in 2014. Application details can be found on the ATN WEXDEV website at:

Donations can also be made to the Clare Burton Memorial Trust Fund by completing and returning the donation form as instructed. Previous recipients of the Clare Burton Scholarship can be found at WEXDEV.
